Dr. Barbara D. Wing Dr. Barbara D. Wing is Chair of the department of biology and the Lora Bond Professor of Biological Science. Dr. Wing received her Ph.D. in 1980 from the University of Kansas in the area of microbiology. Classes taught by Dr. Wing include Fundamentals of Cell Biology, Microbiology and Pathogenic Microbiology. She will also be teaching the Science and Inquiry course, part of the Global Perspectives 21 curriculum. For the past several years, Dr. Wing and her students have been involved in a research project studying the effects of high blood sugar in diabetes on the structure and functioning of cells and proteins in patients with diabetes. The study is currently focusing on the changes which can occur in the structure of proteins when they are exposed to high levels of sugars. This work is currently being funded through a three-year grant from the Smith-Glynn-Callaway Foundation.

Dr. Wesley H. Rowley III Dr. Wesley H. Rowley III came to Drury University in 1989. He received his Ph.D. from the department of anatomy and cell biology in the School of Medicine at East Carolina University in 1987 and completed a two-year post-doctoral fellowship at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md. Since arriving at Drury, he has taught a variety of courses including: Human Anatomy, Comparative Anatomy, Vertebrate Embryology, Histology, and Neurobiology. Since 1991, Dr. Rowley has been studying the development of Xenopus laevis embryos under different environmental conditions.

Dr. Donald Deeds Dr. Donald Deeds, professor of biology, is an alumnus of Drury University earning his B.A. degree with a double major in biology and chemistry in 1969. He received his Ph.D. in the area of human physiology from the University of Kansas in 1974. Dr. Deeds taught for six years at Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas, and returned to join the biology faculty at Drury in 1980. His research interests have ranged from the fundamentals of membrane transport as they relate to kidney function, to risk factors influencing heart disease, and to fitness as it relates to performance in golfers. Currently, Dr. Deeds is serving as the director for the planning and implementation process for Drury's new science and mathematics curriculum for non-science majors. Funding for this has been supplied by an $100,000 grant from the National Science Foundation.

Dr. Roger Young Dr. Roger Young joined the department in August 1996 and teaches Molecular Biology and Genetics. He previously taught Introductory Biology and Microbiology at Texas A&M University after graduating from there in 1994, having completed research into the control of gene expression by plant hormones. He received his bachelor's degree in applied biology from Hatfield Polytechnic in his home country of Great Britain.

Dr. Wendy B. Anderson Dr. Wendy B. Anderson, assistant professor of biology, came to Drury University in August 1998. She received her B.S. and M.S. degrees in biology from Baylor University in Waco, Texas. Her Ph.D. in biology is from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. Dr. Anderson teaches Botany, Ecology, and Environmental Science courses. Her current research as a plant ecologist focuses on two focal ecosystems. As a forest ecologist, she studies the physiology of herbaceous plants and the role they play in forest nutrient cycling processes in Tennessee and southern Missouri. As a desert ecologist, she investigates the influence of marine-derived nutrients on plant an animal populations and communities on desert islands in the Gulf of California. You can find more information here about her research.

Dr. Teresa Carroll Dr. Teresa M.Carroll is a part-time instructor for the Biology department. She received her Ph.D. in science education from the University of Kansas in 2001. She is now working toward a Ph.D. in Aquatic Biology at the University of Kansas. Dr. Carroll’s research interests include community ecology of aquatic ecosystems especially small streams and springs; regulation of community dynamics; ecology of freshwater and marine invertebrates; and food web complexity and linkage strength among systems. Dr. Carroll teaches cell biology and an undergraduate research class entitled “Water Quality in an Ozark Stream”. In addition, Dr. Carroll enjoys taking students scuba diving at remote locations such as Roatan Island, Honduras.

Dr. Ioana Popescu Dr. Ioana Popescu, originally from Romania, completed her B.S. and M.S. at the University of Bucharest. Dr. Popescu came to the United States via the University of Cincinnati, where she completed her doctoral studies in the area of plant population genetics. During her time at the University of Cincinnati, she also developed a great interest in teaching botany and undertook the pursuit of enlighten college students of how important plants are to human life, as well as life on Earth in general. In pursuit of this, Dr. Popescu held two visiting faculty positions across the country: Whitworth College in Spokane WA (1999-2000), and Monmouth College in Monmouth, IL (2000-2001). At Drury, Dr. Popescu is teaching Botany and Cell Biology, and looking forward to developing new plant classes and research.
