Awards

The Greek Excellence Awards were founded by Gamma Sigma Alpha in 2006 to provide an opportunity to recognize the achievement and excellence of the outstanding leaders and supporters of the Greek community.

The Greek Excellence Awards are held each year as the closing event of Greek Week. During the Greek Excellence Awards each year, presenters will announce awards earned by deserving students, chapters and mentors of the Drury Greek community and review highlights of Greek Life accomplishments. These items include chapter member academic achievements, retention and recruitment statistics reviews and community service hours completed and money raised. These special presentations continue to provide positive information to the campus and community about the successes of Drury Greek Life.

Award Selection Committees

The Greek Excellence Awards Selection Committee is composed of at least three members of the Drury community who are knowledgeable about Greek Life but were not associated with a Drury chapter during their collegiate experience. The committee is newly selected by the Student Activities professional staff each year and is asked to choose the winners for the Woman of the Year, Man of the Year, New Member of the Year, and Distinguished Service Awards. The GEA Selection Committee members review nomination forms for all nominees and selects the nominee that they feel best embodies the characteristics of that award. All identifying information is removed from the nomination forms during the selection process. After a GEA Selection Committee member chooses a candidate for each award, they submit their selections to the Student Activities Office. The Student Activities staff processes the results to determine the winner. A non-Student Activities staff member verifies all results before the final awards are presented.

For the President of the Year, Unsung Hero, Living Your Values, Greek Innovation, and Outstanding Alumni Awards, Student Activities Office professional staff members select the winners. Student Activities Office staff determines the recipients of these awards based on nomination forms and accomplishments of each standout nominee.

For Staff of the Year and Faculty of the Year, Greek students select the winners. The Student Activities Office staff determines the recipients of these awards based on the results from a survey of all Greek students.

Nomination Process

Greek chapters should choose the method of chapter nominee selection that works best for the chapter. It is strongly recommended, but not required, to hold a voting session during a regular meeting to select the chapter nominees for each award available.

One nomination packet is distributed to each Greek chapter for a single chapter consensus. It is encouraged, but not required, for the chapter to complete a nomination for each award. The chapter should complete nominations for the awards they feel an individual or organization is the most deserving. The chapter president, an executive committee member, or an organization advisor is required to fill out an Award Recommendation Form for each nomination (except for the Staff of the Year and Faculty of the Year Awards). This includes answering a prompt provided in the Judging Rubric. This form will be used by the GEA Selection Committee (all identifying information will be removed during selection). An Award Recommendation Form should be submitted for each award the chapter would like to be in consideration.

Chapter members may only win each award once during their collegiate career, but a member may win both the New Member of the Year and the Person of the Year Awards during their collegiate career.

The chapter president (or a Gamma Sigma Alpha officer) should return the completed Award Recommendation Forms to the Student Activities Office (FSC 124) by March 1. Late forms will not be accepted and could limit the chapter’s participation in the Greek Excellence Awards.

All nominees will receive their special award invitations by April 1.
