Gamma Sigma Alpha
About the Organization
Gamma Sigma Alpha National Greek Academic Honor Society was founded to promote intellectual interaction between Greek students and the academic community. The purpose of the Society is to promote the advancement of education among Greeks, to instill a greater spirit of cooperation among Greek students and organizations and to encourage excellence in scholarship.
A group of scholastic achievers at the University of Southern California, representing various Greek fraternities and sororities, joined together to create an organization dedicated to the advancement of higher education and academic accomplishment. The Alpha Chapter of Gamma Sigma was founded on November 9, 1989, as a result of this student effort. The national board was established the following year to promote the Society's ideals on campuses across the country. The Society quickly grew to over 170 chapters in a little more than a decade.
The Drury Chapter of Gamma Sigma was founded on December 5, 2005, as an initiative of the Greek President's Council to recognize and reward academic achievements in the Drury Greek Community. The founding members were inducted into the honor society on February 8, 2006.Gamma Sigma Alpha is committed to the leadership, academic achievement and excellence of Greek members everywhere. Gamma Sigma Alpha also recognized outstanding Greek community academic performance as compared to the all university average through regional academic achievement awards and grants scholarship for graduate study to its members.
Members must attend at least 75% meetings annually and participate in one or more chapter events or activities throughout the year. Members must also maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or above (on a 4.0 scale) throughout their Society membership.
How to Join
At the beginning of each semester, the Gamma Sigma Alpha advisor and officers will review eligible students and send an invitation for induction via email or campus mail to students who meet the membership qualifications. If the student does not respond or chooses not to accept the induction invitation at that time, the student may receive another invitation during another semester, if still eligible.

More Information About GSA:
Students are eligible for membership based on grade point average (GPA), active membership in one of Drury University's Greek fraternities or sororities, and current enrollment as a full-time Drury University student. Members must earn a 3.5 GPA cumulative or in one semester of their Junior/Senior year (at least 60 credit hours) to be eligible for membership. Members must complete a Membership Expectations Contract at the beginning of their membership period. This form details expectations for all members to uphold standards of the Gamma Sigma Alpha.
Gamma Sigma Alpha officers are responsible for the operation and activities of the Society. The officer team leads initiatives and develop programs for campus and community wide promotion of Gamma Sigma Alpha. Up to two members from the same chapter may serve as Gamma Sigma Alpha officers during a term. Officer terms begin in January and end in the fall semester after elections have been completed. Gamma Sigma Alpha has standing officer positions:
- President: Responsible for the general operation of Gamma Sigma Alpha, including meetings, committees and communication with GSA advisor.
- VP Academics: Responsible for all matters pertaining to the promotion of good scholarship as basic to intellectual achievement including programs for scholarship advancement.
- VP Event Planning: Responsible for all matters pertaining to event planning and coordinating for events including philanthropy projects, recruitment events, and the Greek Excellence Awards.
- VP Administration: Responsible for all communication efforts internally and externally of the organization, as well as record keeper of minutes and attendance.
- VP Membership: Responsible for planning and coordinating all matters pertaining to membership, which includes both fall and spring induction ceremonies.
Events, Recognition & Awards
Gamma Sigma Alpha sponsors multiple recognition opportunities for Greek organizations and students each year. All of these events are designed to provide recognition opportunities to all Greek students, not just current GSA members. These events include:
- Academic Recognition Certificates: This reception is held each semester and highlights the academic achievements of members and chapters. Award recipients are eligible to receive a Gold Gamma GPA award, Silver Sigma GPA award or a Bronze Alpha award.
- Greek Excellence Awards: This formal ceremony is held each year to conclude Greek Week. Awards are presented in many different areas including member awards, chapter awards and faculty/staff awards.
- GPA Congratulations Letters: These letters are sent via email to students each semester who earn a 3.5 GPA or higher. Chapter presidents also receive a congratulatory letter to read in chapter meeting that highlights each chapter member meeting this requirement.
