Associate of Science in English Program

The College of Continuing Professional Studies offers an associate of science in English. This program is designed to develop the students' skills in writing and speaking effectively and in reading and evaluating literature with understanding. The program also prepares students for transfer to a four-year school.

Associate of Science in English Curriculum

In addition to general education requirements, students pursuing the associate of science degree in English are required to complete the following 22 hours of coursework:

Required Courses (7 hours):
ENGL 200: Literature Matters (3 hours)
ENGL 301: Theory and Practice (3 hours)
LIBR 211: Information Research Skills (3 hours)

British and American Literature (choose two of the following - 6 hours):
ENGL 201: British Literature 1: Medieval through Eighteenth Century (3 hours)
ENGL 202: British Literature 2: Nineteenth Century through the Present (3 hours)
ENGL 203: American Literature 1: 1620-1865 (3 hours)
ENGL 204: American Literature 2: 1865-1980 (3 hours)

Advanced Literature Courses (6 hours):
Choose any two 300- or 400-level literature courses listed in the catalog, one of which must be Pre-1800 (Courses that fulfill Pre-1800 requirement include ENGL 305 Studies in Ancient through Medieval Literature; ENGL 306 Studies in 16th through 18th Century Literature; ENGL 342 Shakespeare and Ethics; and some instances of ENGL 303 Single Author.).

In addition, choose one English Elective (3 hours).
