Greek Life House & Suite Guidelines

The responsibility of maintaining a safe and positive learning environment for chapter members is the ultimate goal of a fraternity house or sorority suite.  Greek organizations should ensure that everyone living in, meeting in and visiting the chapter house or sorority suite have a safe, positive experience.

Drury University requires that Greek organizations adhere to FIPG guidelines for all house/suite-related operations and activities.

House/Suite Manager Standards are required to oversee the safety, cleaning and training for all house/suite-related projects and activities.  House/Suite managers are expected to complete these regular tasks to enhance the Drury Greek Life experience for all members and guests using chapter facilities, including:

  • Monthly Health & Safety Checks
  • Daily Health & Safety Checks with IFC/Panhellenic Officers during recruitment periods
  • Regular chapter cleaning & maintenance programs
  • Post Chapter Evacuation Strategy in House/Suite kitchen
  • Post Chapter Emergency Numbers in House/Suite kitchen

Greek students are encouraged to attend house/suite-related educational safety programs that enhance their Drury Greek Life experience.  These programs should be held once each calendar year and include:

  • Emergency Plan Review
  • Fire Drill
  • Tornado Drill
  • Fire Extinguisher Inspection & Location Notification

All fraternity houses and sorority suites are required to meet all local fire code standards and health code standards. Enforcement of the fire code regulations and restrictions is the responsibility of the Greek organization.

If there is a violation of fire code regulations, the area may be closed. Please check the Fire Safety Procedures for room capacity limits.

Candles should not be used in chapter houses, sorority suites or individual rooms except under controlled circumstances such as initiation and rituals.

All chapters must have common room phones accessible for all members; these are traditionally placed in the chapter kitchen. 

Safety information must be posted by all common phones:

  • Emergency numbers for fire department
  • Emergency numbers for police department
  • Emergency numbers for ambulance/emergency response
  • Evacuation strategy and routes from chapter house/suite (this must be posted by common room and on the back door of each sleeping room/suite)

Parlor fees are assessed each semester to the student’s Drury University business account and deposited into the chapter’s Drury University business account.  Parlor fee amounts are set by the chapter leadership and chapter advisor, but traditionally are $75 per semester.  

The chapter leadership, in conjunction with the chapter advisors, determines how to use parlor fees.  Chapter Treasurers have access to the parlor fees through the Drury University chapter account and can request checks when needed.

Drury University fraternity chapters have sole discretion regarding who is permitted to reside in the Fraternity House rooms.  Each student living in a fraternity house is required to complete a Drury University Housing Contract and all housing related charges appear on the Drury University bill as university-related charges.

Fraternity chapters are required to maintain a housing occupancy rate at the average occupancy rate established and maintained by Drury, as of March 1 each academic year.

Fraternity House Occupancy Totals:

  • KAPPA ALPHA: 23 residents
  • LAMBDA CHI ALPHA: 25 residents
  • SIGMA NU: 24 residents
  • SIGMA PI: 26 residents

For chapter activities held in the fraternity houses, the individuals present should not exceed fire code capacity at any given time in any area of the fraternity house.  It is the responsibility of chapter members to monitor and uphold fire code capacity guidelines.

Drury University sorority chapters do not have sorority houses; sorority women traditionally reside in campus housing.  Sorority chapters each have suites, a large room used for meetings and activities.  Each suite includes a large living-room style area, a kitchen, an entry foyer and a secure storage area.

Sorority Suite Fire Code Capacity:

  • DELTA DELTA DELTA: 70 person occupancy
  • KAPPA DELTA: 70 person occupancy
  • PI BETA PHI: 70 person occupancy
  • ZETA TAU ALPHA: 70 person occupancy

For chapter activities held in the sorority suites, the individuals present should not exceed fire code capacity at any given time.  It is the responsibility of chapter members to monitor and uphold fire code capacity guidelines.
