Songs from the Second Floor
dir. Roy Andersson, Sweden/France 1998

Swedish surrealist Roy Andersson's first film since 1975 is a moving, apocalyptic, startlingly funny series of vignettes — a kind of cross between Ingmar Bergman and Monty Python, with a soundtrack by ABBA's Benny Andersson. Set in an unnamed European city, in a state of chaos after some unspecified financial disaster, Songs moves from one haunted citizen to the next. It feels like a dream, but the cultural and political commentary very much targets our world; in one scene, a blindfolded maiden is pushed off a cliff as a sacrifice for the gods of commerce. - Ragtag Cinemacafé
