Alumni Spotlight: Alex Schrader '17
Alex Schrader graduated with an ACS certified Bachelor of Science in Chemistry with minors in Math and Computer Science in 2017. Originally from Wichita, Kansas, he is pursuing a doctoral degree in Chemistry at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
Accessible research opportunities helped Alex cement his professional goals and take steps to further his career. "Drury offered research opportunities from day one, starting a research project during my first semester," Alex recalls. His undergraduate work earned him a summer research position at the University of Wisconsin-Madison during his second summer at Drury. It also helped him confirm his interest in attending graduate school.
Professors guided Alex as he considered graduate programs and went through the application process. He lists Dr. Manpadi as an impactful mentor during his time at Drury. She not only offered assistance with classes, but also helped him craft successful personal statements for graduate school applications. "She has helped me work through what I wanted to do, and helped me put words to my feelings and thoughts," says Alex. He's grateful for her help and support.
Alex advises underclassmen to get involved in the Drury community outside of the classroom. “Don’t be afraid to go out and have fun,” he says. “Go to First Friday Art Walk, hockey games, theatre shows, or SUB events. Get out, enjoy what Springfield has to offer, and make friends that will be with you longer after you graduate.”
