Online Education Technical Requirements
Preparing your computer to take online courses
Taking an online course means that one needs to have a computer that is capable of interacting in a Blackboard online class. This requirement is easy to meet provided students have the following software available:
- A reliable Internet connection
- The ability to upload (attach) and download a file
- A word processing software. Microsoft Works, Microsoft Word or Word Perfect are examples of programs that will do this. A free alternative to students is Microsoft Office through Office 365 through Drury's Technical Support, or OpenOffice.org
Important Alert Concerning Internet Explorer
If you are using Internet Explorer as your web browser, it is possible that you may encounter some difficulties when accessing Blackboard. Some features of Blackboard do not interact well with Internet Explorer. As a result, we recommend using Mozilla Firefox (available free at http://www.mozilla.com) as your internet browser for your online courses. If you are unsure of what internet browser you are using, try visiting http://www.whatbrowser.org. This website will display the browser you are using on the screen.
Check to see if your browser will work with Blackboard:
Check your browser’s compatibility with Blackboard by logging in and clicking on the “Browser Test” subtab in the “My Institution” section. Simply clicking on the tab runs the check, so the screen you see provides the results.
If you have any questions about these technical requirements, please contact the Online Education Office at firstname.lastname@example.org or (417) 873-7727.
