Please tell us a brief bio of your career – how long have you taught at Drury, what courses do you typically teach, what are your research interests, what is your educational background, etc.
I started as an Acting Controller for a College and progressed over time to serve as the Vice President for Financial Affairs, later serving as the Interim Chief Executive Officer during two different presidential searches. After a 25 career in administrative roles (during which time I always taught one class per semester, either Managerial Accounting or Governmental/Not-for-profit Accounting) I entered full time teaching as the Chair of the Department of Accounting, assisting numerous student in their quest to become CPAs. I helped establish the first free-market business school, designed the MBA program for the president’s business institute in Alma-Ata, Kazakhstan and directed the MBA program for a period of three years. I enjoy interacting with students and helping them to achieve their goals.
Joining Drury in 2002, I began teaching the courses listed above. My research interests vary and include ethics and moral reasoning related to accountants, cost accounting systems employed by manufacturing businesses, tax evasion and more recently the financial trends in the management of the Not-for-profit sector.
My educational background is a BSBA in Accounting from the University of Missouri, the MBA from Southern Illinois University – Edwardsville, the PhD from the University of Missouri. I was fortunate to have been selected to join a group of educators from around the world to attend the Institute for Educational Management at Harvard University.
In addition to my educational credentials I have completed the following certification programs:
CPA – Certified Public Accountant (licensed to practice in Missouri),
CMA – Certified Management Accountant,
CFM – Certified in Financial Management,
CGFM – Certified Government Financial Management, and
CVA – Certified Valuation Analyst.
How does the Breech School of Business prepare students for their professional career?
Individual instruction and small class sizes are vital to the success of the accounting student and the Drury University accounting program. The first time pass-rate of the CPA exam by Drury students is significantly above national averages for other four-year institutions. Computer labs, tutors, and access to instructors also contribute heavily to developing the accounting skills necessary for students to secure top tier jobs at competitive salaries.
What sets Breech apart from other business schools?
Each of our faculty are not only academically prepared, we are all involved in “practicing” the profession. It is being able to pull examples from our own professional experiences to explain and clarify accounting theory that truly sets us apart from other programs. We make the textbook real, relating the reading to specific personal examples of why things work or fail.
Do you have any favorite memories inside the Breech building?
There are so many…. Mostly the look on a student’s face when they “get it” or the phone call from the current student who just passed a section of the CPA exam, everybody wearing coats and gloves to class because the heating system was not functioning, and always the booming… “Is everybody happy?” echoing down the hall at
What advice would you offer to a new student beginning their course of study in the Breech School of Business?
Strive to do your best in every discipline and realize that an understanding of all disciplines is necessary to effectively coordinate the achievement of a diverse set of organizational objectives.
