Alumni Spotlight: Nick Gray '13

Nick Gray of Paralandra is an excellent example of how a degree from Drury University can lead to a successful and fulfilling creative career. After graduating from Rogersville High School with multiple cross country and track records under his belt, Nick accepted an athletic scholarship from Drury so he could stay close to home.

Among his favorite aspects of his Drury experience are the relationships he made with his coaches, teammates, and professors, remembering, “I never had a professor I didn’t like.”

Hitting the Road After Graduation

After graduating from Drury with a degree in Design Arts in 2013, Nick was approached by a high school friend to launch a new band. As he had always had a calling in his life for creating music, he accepted the offer and became the drummer for Paralandra.

The band’s reputation has really gained momentum in the three years of its existence: they are now regionally known, have recorded an entire album, have played at multiple music festivals across the country, and have opened for big-time bands such as Hinder and Fuel.

Blending Corporate Skills and the Arts

Nick was able to use his corporate skills in design arts to lead the band to its continuing success, and hopes to one day be a full time musician solely focused on advancing the band. In addition to the current pursuit of Paralandra’s national reputation, he also applies his skills at Jumpsix Marketing here in Springfield.

Nick is passionate about his experience at Drury and hopes to one day give back to the community by sponsoring the athletics department. When asked about his advice for current Drury students, he replied, “Do something that doesn’t feel like work,” a statement that he has certainly lived by.

You can check out Paralandra at and on social media, or listen to their EP on iTunes. Nick is a prime example of how student artists with a passion can thrive with a degree from Drury.
