Alumni Spotlight: Lisa Miles '92
Life has a funny way of putting you on the right path, even if it is an unexpected one. Lisa Miles did not start her journey at Drury expecting to be where she is today, but now, she couldn’t imagine it any other way.
Mom to two daughters and three dogs, Lisa Miles is a 1992 Drury graduate with degrees in biology and exercise and sport science. Her education in these fields created a variety of job possibilities; so, Lisa worked to find the right fit for herself and her family. “I wasn’t aligned with the thought that if I graduated with a certain degree, I had to seek that certain job.” Lisa decided to continue her education and sought her associate’s degree in dental hygiene. Her education in this area is diverse, as she attended three different schools in three different cities while earning her degree. She is now back in the Springfield area, where she was born and raised, and enjoys spending time with her daughters outdoors.
The Key to Success
“With a caring and giving heart, your education can take you anywhere.” Drury’s liberal arts education provided Lisa with the tools she needed to be successful as a student, health practitioner, and now dental educator. She now teaches future dental hygienists at the collegiate level, and gives them a lasting piece of advice that has propelled her personal and professional life for the last 25 years. “Never depend on anyone for your successes; they are all yours to have or have not.” Miles learned during her time as a student that no one can force you to be your best self. The personal responsibility she developed to earn her degrees has become an important attribute in her career.
A Proud Legacy to Pass On
The Drury that Lisa remembers shares many similarities with today’s Drury. The “close-knit atmosphere of students and staff” continues today and remains one of the most impactful assets that the university has to offer. Miles’ instructors encouraged her on an academic and personal level. Her Drury experience included Greek Life, studying abroad in London, and making life-long friendships and connections with her fellow classmates. She now passes this legacy on to her daughter, who will graduate from Drury in May of 2018! To her fellow alumni and current parents, Lisa says, “Consider giving back to Drury as an investment in our future. Donating not only creates a legacy for giving back, but it also supports a university in our community that does so much good.”
