Alumni Spotlight: J.D. Mahaffey '15
J.D. Mahaffey is an example of how Drury prepares its students for future success. Immediately after graduation, J.D. was hired at Walmart’s corporate office in Bentonville, Arkansas. “I was fresh out of college and able to work at the world’s largest company making decisions that would affect 2.3 million employees and 245 million customers across the world.” Since then, he has been promoted twice. J.D. currently leads a team to make technology and automation changes that impact 28 different countries.
A Drury Family
For J.D., Drury University runs in the family. He is a third generation Drury graduate. Following in his family’s footsteps, J.D. decided to study at Drury, earning a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance and Management and a Law and Society minor. On campus, he was the founder and vice president of the Financial Management Association, an ambassador for the Breech School of Business, and a member of the business honor society Delta Mu Delta. He was also on the founding committee for Breech Business Week, which continues to take place each year. He graduated in May of 2015 as the valedictorian of his class.
A Global Mindset
At Drury, J.D. gained knowledge, real-world experience, and lasting connections with students, professors, and alumni. Most importantly, he learned to have a global mindset in both business and life. “I learned to think about the big picture and how to build relationships with others.” Some of J.D.’s favorite memories are of studying abroad, which allowed him to “bridge the gap” between Springfield and other parts of the world.
His advice to current students is to build connections and get involved on campus. “Drury stays with you,” he says. “People may move away from campus and away from Springfield but there is still that connection.” J.D. maintains relationships with his past professors and peers. He also enjoys being able to give back by recruiting the next generation of Drury graduates and attending alumni events.
When he is not in the office or traveling abroad, J.D. can be found hiking, playing tennis, or investing in the stock market.
